Iran issues its own ceasefire proposal, calling for war reparations and sovereignty over Strait of Hormuz

The United States and Iran are still engaged in peace talks, the White House said Wednesday (March 25, 2026), despite Iranian state media saying Tehran had rejected Washington’s plan to end the war. Irandismissed a U.S. proposal to end the war and set out its own terms for peace, even as it continued trading fire with Israel.
The U.S. proposal offered a ceasefire and sanctions relief in return for Tehran abandoning its nuclear programme and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. According to state-run Press TV, Iran has laid down five conditions to end the war, which the U.S. and Israel launched on February 28 with the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several other leaders.

Meanwhile, parrying the questions raised by the Opposition regarding the reported central role played by Pakistan in mediating between the U.S. and Iran, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Wednesday (March 25, 2026) termed the neighbouring country a “ dalal” and said that it had been playing this role since 1981.

Responding to criticism over India’s “silence”, Mr. Jaishankar asserted that with nearly one crore Indians living in West Asian countries, it was crucial for India’s strategic and economic interests to maintain a balanced position. India, he said, remained in a unique position, able to communicate with all sides.
